The Christmas Tree Lighting Ceremony and Christmas Night Light Parade at Greenwood Park in historic downtown Del Rio in early December marked the beginning of the holidays in our city and Val Verde County. From Christmas block parties to the magic of the Nutcracker ballet, Del Rio and neighboring communities keenly anticipate the season and embrace the holiday spirit with a great sense of excitement that is unique to the Oasis of Texas.
A special holiday event close to our hearts is the Annual Christmas at the Museum Toy & Food Drive at Whitehead Memorial Museum on December 18th, from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. There is no admission fee as visitors are asked to please bring non-perishable food items and/or new, unwrapped toys. Kids can have a photo with Santa and receive a goody bag from the big guy, take part in holiday-themed arts and crafts (glitter and cotton balls will steal the show), have their faces painted, and view the cadena nativity scene. The entire family can nosh on tamales, bunuelos, and hot chocolate from the snack bar. All food and toys collected will be delivered to Loaves & Fishes and Briana’s Blessings. Wonder, glee, and sticky little fingers will be the benchmarks of a fabulously festive celebration of community, togetherness, and the magic of Christmas.
