Cecil Del Rio’s Favorite Spots to Cool Down This Summer

Texas heat is a season all its own, and Del Rio sits squarely in one of the hottest spots in the state. Cooling down isn’t just an option on a hot summer day in Del Rio, it’s a necessity. Luckily, we’re situated near some of the best locations in the state to grab a cool dip. Read on to find out about some of our favorites, and if we’ve missed any, make sure and visit us on Facebook and let us know about it!

Devil’s River State Natural Area

Situated just north of Del Rio, Devil’s River State Natural Area offers remote, rugged landscape and diverse wildlife alongside spring-fed swimming holes and hiking trails. Covering over 37,000 acres, Devil’s River is as isolated as it is beautiful. You won’t find picnic tables or RV hookups here, just mountainous terrain and limestone-lined rivers and creeks funneling clear, cold water south to the Rio. We heartily recommend spending an hour or two wandering the miles of hiking trails criss-crossing the area before heading to one of several swimming pools along the river and diving straight in. The water’s plenty cold, even in the summer.

Garner State Park

If you’re looking for a more prepared spot with amenities, Garner State Park is a good pick. At just under two hours away from Del Rio, this state park offers campsites, cabins, and screened shelters to accommodate large groups or families. Running through the park is the infamous Frio River, so named because of the chilly water temperatures year-round. Swim, wade, paddleboard, or float an innertube down the 2.9 miles of river inside the park, then head back to your campsite to freshen up before hitting the park pavilion for dancing every night during the summer. Garner fills up quickly, so you’ll want to plan ahead for a trip, even if you’re not camping.

San Felipe Springs

You can’t visit Del Rio in the summer without a stop at one of the spring-fed pools along San Felipe Creek. The springs are the sole source of drinking water for Del Rio, and are famed for their clarity and cleanliness. The length of the creek is dotted with ten springs that pump millions of gallons of cold, clear water up from the Edwards Aquifer every day, and are perfect for a day frolicking with the family. The headwaters are on private property, so stick to the prepared pools inside Del Rio proper or just upstream.
