About Sonora

Sonora’s history starts with water. The advancement of deepwater well drilling technology brought water to areas previously considered unsuitable for living. A well drilled in what would become Sonora in 1889 opened up the area for habitation. Growth was slow in the ranching community until connected by the railroad in 1930. The railroad eventually was rendered obsolete by improvements to the roads which allowed trucking to take over the majority of the town’s exports.

Today Sonora has a lot to offer. The nearby Caverns of Sonora are a National Natural Landmark known for their stunning beauty. They are notable for large crystal formations in the caves which opened in 1960 and still delight visitors today. If you like your natural beauty above ground, the Eaton Hill Nature Center covers 37 acres and offers over 2 miles of hiking trails. History buffs will appreciate the Old Sonora Ice House Ranch Museum which examines the life of Will Carver, a member of Butch Cassidy’s Wild Bunch who died in a shootout in town in 1901.
