The Base, XLT, and Limited trims come with a 2.3-liter turbocharged, four-cylinder engine with an output of 300 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque. When you're looking for more gusto from your Explorer, choose the ST and Platinum trims, which have a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 engine that delivers 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque. For seamless shifting, all engines pair with a 10-speed automatic transmission.

If you plan on towing a boat or trailer, when properly equipped, the Explorer has a maximum towing capacity of 5,600 pounds. The hybrid version can haul up to 5,000 pounds. The rear-wheel-drive system found on the Base, XLT, and Limited helps provide traction on a variety of terrains. The ST and Platinum come standard with all-wheel-drive, which is available on the lower trims. The independent rear suspension gives all trims a smooth ride, and the terrain management system lets you adjust driving modes as the weather and terrain change. If you plan on taking your Explorer on rugged trails, choose the optional four-wheel-drive system, which comes standard on the ST.
